IFF2023 Winners Selected for SVIC2023 Finalist Showcase in SJSU

Our Innovate for Future (IFF) 2023 champion, St. Stephen’s Girls’ College (SSGC) of secondary stream and 1st Runner Up, of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), Shatin has been selected for Silicon Valley Innovation Challenge (SVIC) 2023 Finalist Showcase under San Jose State University (SJSU) global program. Their innovative projects will be presented in Nov 28, 2023.
“Eat At All” System is designed by SSGC for reducing food waste at the source. It consists of a smart menu, food shelf and cloud database. The smart menu is connected to the smart food shelf which automatically sends the required ingredients for each dish. The cloud database (storing data on ingredient quantities and expiry dates) is automatically updated whenever ingredients are added or used. The database also provides information on popular dishes and the ingredient purchase history for reference.
“ZeroVio”, a Software System is designed by IVE/Shatin for supporting human activities to provide a real-time video surveillance of violent events. The system provides monitoring and preventing violent incidents efficiently and effectively which is critical for ensuring public safety.

Our Innovate for Future 2023 (IFF2023) champions from secondary and tertiary streams as well as our IFF2020 champion from tertiary presented their innovative ideas with project showcases to industry people at Hong Kong Computer & Communications Festival 2023 on 28 Aug 2023 at HKCEC.
Our IFF champions to present are :
- IFF2023 : Eat it All by St. Stephen’s Girls’ College
- IFF2023 : SEAT/A General Framework for Seat Management in Public Space by Lingnan University
- IFF2020 : An AI-based Progression Risk Assessment System for Knee Osteoarthritis by CLAIRE Clinical AI Research
This public exposure allowed our young students to grow and improve our society through the practical experience in the community. Our IFF platform is developed to foster social innovation for a sustainable future.

IFF2023 Pitch & Conference Day at Cyberport on 5 Aug 2023

Innovate for Future 2023 (IFF2023), an annual innovation and technology competition, have been held successfully on 5 Aug 2023 at Cyberport. It was a wonderful one-day event that covered students pitch, conference talks, showcases and awards ceremony. All the students could be at present to share their innovative prototypes to our IFF mentors & judges, partners, and industry guests.
We were excited to invite our honourable guests, Mr. Howard Cheng, COO of Cyberport to give us an opening remark in the morning and, Mr. Francis Wong, Executive Director of Sumitomo Corporation Equity Asia to give us a opening remark in the awards ceremony.
All the winners were selected by our judge panel during the pitch day and they will have opportunity to submit their project proposal for the SJSU global program.

Innovate for Future Partnership with MakerBay Foundation

HKETA’s Startup & Mentorship Sub-committee have launched Innovate for Future (IFF) platform since 2019. It is an open competition of innovation and technology to inspire young students in Hong Kong SAR to build innovative products and/or services to solve real life problems. Our IFF aims at fostering social innovation for a more sustainable future. It becomes a sustainable program for students to pursue their dreams and contribute to society through our technology coaching and mentorship.
MakerBay Foundation is a creative space and educational platform dedicated to helping youth make an impact through developing their maker skills and mindset. They believe in the potential of all youth to make a difference in the world, and they are committed to empowering and enabling them to do so. MakerBay operates makerspaces in Hong Kong SAR to provide people with the space, tools and training young people need to be innovators and serve the community through projects of maker education, impact innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Our partnership could extend our mission to foster science and technology culture by educational technology on our youth community though our collaborative activities and expertise in workforce development. We will joint force to explore and develop technology and other educational workshops in education sectors. Such programs could promote interest in latest technology education among young students and provide continuing training on career development. We also provide professional mentoring to young talents and early career engineers to cultivate their potential as future entrepreneurs.
IFF2023 Pitch Teams Visit Axis Experience Centre for Video Surveillance & AI Technology

IFF2023 Awards and Technology & Support Sponsors, Axis Communications provided our IFF school teams with valuable insights training and real applications tour how video surveillance solutions applying into a smart and safe city at Axis Experience Centre on 15 July 2023.
Our school students have a wonderful onsite experience and practical training onnetwork video solution with AI technologies for video data analytics in real-time, scene intelligence, thermal imaging, electronic image stabilization, radar technology and etc into one system-on-chip feature demonstration at the Axis laboratory. Those iOT features and solutions revolutionize into smart cities in many ways such as traffic management and optimization, crowd monitoring, waste management and crisis management.

最近我們再次探訪一間中學的S.3學生團隊，他們正繼續探究科技創新的新方案，主題是科技/AI如何改變教學模式，以增強學生的學習能力。團隊由物理科老師帶領，老師有熱誠，亦肯定科學對學生未來發展的重要，故利用課餘時間跟我們合作，與學生一起探索和分享。老師指學生對科學和未來科技充滿熱情，也喜歡探索和實踐。
新方案得到IFF科技夥伴的全力支持，提供硬件設備和培訓課程。而我們的年青會員會擔任導師，他們都是修讀電腦工程的大學生，也是學生團隊的同校師姐。他們將積極參與指導工作，以完成一個為期一年的軟硬件開發項目，這也是我們IFF發展中一個傳承的實驗計劃 (STEM@HKETA Platform) 。
Innovate for Future 是一項公開的創新科技比賽，旨在鼓勵本地年輕人發展創新產品或服務，以應對現實生活中的種種挑戰，並藉科技推動社會積極發展。 而IFF2021/22中學組別冠軍得主 (Care-E-Bot/智得耆樂) 將於灣仔會展「BUSINESS GOVirtual科技會議2023」中探討和分享她們在打造創新產品方面的動向。

IFF2023 Organizing Committee is glad to announce that top 5 school teams of Secondary and Tertiary streams have been selected by our mentor panel. Top 5 school teams will undergo our IFF mentorship session including industry visit, technology training and mentor advisory. Finally, they will present their project ideas to our judging panel at the pitch day on 5 Aug 2023 at Cyberport.
Besides, 5 teams of Certificate of Merits are also selected and they will be invited to join our conference talks and award ceremony.

Our HKETA’s startup & mentorship subcommittee was invited by Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) to make a career talk for a final year of Computer Science and Information Technology undergraduate lecture on 27 Jan 2023. The career talk was including our mentorship program, Innovate for Future (IFF) platform introduction, career opportunity for startup and global tech market in Hong Kong.
Our Technology & Support Sponsors and Partners of IFF : Axis Communications and Armitage Technologies shared with the students the latest technology and IT/ICT industry, career opportunity and more specific smart city software applications such as sensor fusion, vehicle to everything, AI edge device on IOT, crowd management, intelligent traffic enforcement robot, surveillance system, and etc those have been deployed in Hong Kong.

IFF2021 Champion : PresentAR Team Selected for SVIC Finalist Showcase 2022 in SJSU

Our Innovate for Future (IFF) 2021 champion, PresentAR from the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), Shatin has been selected for Silicon Valley Innovation Challenge (SVIC) Finalist Showcase 2022 under San Jose State University (SJSU) global program. The PresentAR team has presented their innovative project in Nov 19, 2022 with well recognition by judge panel.
PresentAR is a software application (APP), provides the best storytelling experience and allows users directly interact with the objects in the presentation with supporting by AR technology, hand gesture recognition and voice control. It is targeted to use in the video conferencing, virtual presentation and online product unveiling events.
Their teammates continue to further study in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology respectively. At the same time, this project is under developed for commercialization and supported by our industry program.

One of the winners, the first runner up in tertiary stream of Innovate for Future 2020 (IFF2020) competition: Elderlive has been selected for Silicon Valley Innovation Challenge (SVIC) Finalist Showcase 2021 under San Jose State University (SJSU) global program. The Elderlive team has pitched their innovative idea and showcase in Dec 1, 2021.
Congratulations to the Elderlive Team who was among many international university teams submitted, won the Best Innovation from a Partner Institution Award in SVIC Finalist Showcase 2021. The project of Elderlive is a transparent and bilingual of elderly home comparison platform to improve elderly living condition in Hong Kong. This project is developed by two undergraduate students of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) : Angel Woo, studying in Computer Science & Business and Phoebe Woo, studying in Law (PCLL), Cambridge LLM.
Our Innovate For Future (IFF) is an open competition of innovation and technology to inspire Young Students in Hong Kong to build innovative products and/or services to solve real life problems. Innovate For Future 2021 (IFF2021) Online information session is held successfully on 20 NOV 2021 (SAT). The competition theme this year is Embracing the “New Normal” with Resilience: Sustainability, Well-being, and Connectivity. It is the third year for our Youth to organize this annual event. Besides the tertiary school stream and secondary school stream, we have added a “primary school” stream this year to scale up our competition event in Hong Kong. The final champion will have the opportunity to submit project ideas for the SJSU/SVIC global program.
The competition is started to open for school team formation on 1 NOV 2021 to 28 JAN 2022.

HKETA Youth Joined NICE K12 Cybersecurity Education Conference with SJSU

Our HKETA Youth Member, Mr. Calvin Kam presented together with Dr. Alan Wong, Director, Silicon Valley Center for Global Studies (SVCGS), San Jose State University, at NICE k12 cybersecurity education conference on Dec 8 3PM (US time). Most attendants are from K12 education backgrounds and over 100 participants joined his session.
SVCGS collaborates with HKETA to incorporate cybersecurity awareness concepts into “Innovate For Future”, a smart-city themed competition targeting K-12 students in this “FinTech Hub” city. Participants are coached in cybersecurity awareness and incorporate such concepts into their innovative entries. Our IFF2020 competition will involve prototyping, such as computer vision and artificial intelligence applications. The co-presenter described the incorporation of cyber awareness into the ideation and technical training workshops.

One of the winners, Most Innovative Idea Award of Innovate For Future 2019 Competition (IFF2019) : ADHDreamer has been invited to be the finalist of Silicon Valley Innovation Challenge (SVIC) Showcase 2020 through San Jose State University (SJSU) global program. The school team has pitched their innovative idea and showcase their creativity to industry leaders, investors and recruiters in Dec 1, 2020
Congratulations to the ADHDreamer Team from St. Paul’s Convent School, who was among hundreds of submitted university teams, won the Best Overall Innovation #2, and Best Healthcare Innovation Award in SVIC Finalist Showcase 2020. The ADHDreamer team developed a mobile app which helps ADHD kids to improve their focus / attention through playing games.
Our Innovate For Future (IFF) is an open competition of innovation and technology to inspire Young Students from Secondary Schools and Higher Educational Institutes/Universities in Hong Kong to build innovative products and/or services to solve real life problems. Congratulations to one of our IFF2019 winners, ADHDreamer by St. Paul’s Convent School , who received the Most Innovative Idea Award in IFF2019. The team is invited to be the finalist of the Silicon Valley Innovation Challenge (SVIC) Finalist Showcase 2020. They will pitch their idea and present the innovation at the SVIC Finalist Showcase on Dec 1.

Hackathon and Training Workshops was held on 05 Sept, 2020. I am glad to have Mr. Calvin Lau from Lingnan University to deploy an interesting workshop on design thinking. We received a lot of feedbacks and interactions with our participants.
Mr. Calvin Kam, HKETA Youth Member, also shared the latest AI tools, and cybersecurity knowledges.
Around 45 participants joined this workshop.

HKETA Youth Team is glad to announce that Innovate For Future will be held again in 2020.
There will be 2 streams: Secondary school stream and Tertiary stream. The competition theme is Technology Shaping a Better Life: Health, Intelligence, Communication. This competition is supported by our international partner, San Jose State University (SJSU).

Award Presentation & IndustryConnect Tech Showcase

The 3 teams – Champion, Most Innovative Idea Award, and Best Presentation Award received awards presented by Dr. Alan Wong, Director of Silicon Valley Center For Global Studies, San Jose State University on Jan 17, 2020.
The teams also showcased their winning projects at IndustryConnect Tech Showcase at Hong Kong Science Park during HKETA annual dinner. They received a lot of feedback from the guests for their projects, and will continue further research & development with IFF mentorship support.
The winning team will join SJSU Global Program for further development and showcases.

Mentorship Kickoff session

Top 5 school teams are selected by our mentor panel, and will undergo the mentorship session.
School teams are invited to HKSTP Arrow Lab for Mentorship Kickoff meeting. Students visit the lab and meet their mentors and have Prototype Coaching.
Training Workshop #2: Coding with Arduino

Students leaned Arduino Coding on Sep 21, 2019 in VTC STEM Education Centre. Ms Monica Leung, OC Chairperson, offered a training session for students to build prototypes with Arduino.
Students asked questions related to project proposal, and we are looking for proposal submissions for the STEM Competition.
Training Workshop #1 on Aug 03

Training Workshop to learn coding are held successfully on 03 Aug, 2019 in City University. Students learn coding with micro:bit and Sphero BOLT with the support of our sponsor REVOLT IT.
Students enjoy a lot on the coding project, and build up the problem solving skills, which is essential for proposal submission.

Idea Generation & Cybersecurity Workshop is held on 13 July, 2019 at City University. We are glad to invite Mr Calvin Lau, Senior Project Officer (Research), Office of Service-Learning, Lingnan University, Hong Kong to coach students for idea generation. Mr. Calvin Kam, OC Team of Innovate For Future also talk about cybersecurity in the training workshop, to ensure school teams adding the cybersecurity elements to their project proposal.

HKETA Youth's STEM Club Plan a STEM Competition in Hong Kong

HKETA Youth Subcommittee is proud to announce that our STEM Club has been well established in Jan this year in which the platform is developed and operated by a group of young members and professionals. We target to develop and deliver STEM activity, and workshop programs that could promote interest in STEM technology among young students and talents into the local community in Hong Kong. We also fully support a lot of STEM events and activities including technical workshops and STEM sharing programs in industry sectors, academic institutes and local universities in Hong Kong.
Our STEM Club will plan to organize an annual STEM competition: Innovate for Future on 16th Nov, this year. Innovate for Future is an open competition to inspire young secondary school students in Hong Kong to build products to solve real life problems through idea to prototype development. Our theme of this competition is Society – Smarter Living, Smarter Schools, and Smarter City.
In this competition, students will demonstrate an innovative idea and build a product prototype to solve problems in the society. Competition will provide mentorship coaching and support during hardware and software prototype development before final pitch. This competition is supported by our international partner, San Jose State University (SJSU) and her Silicon Valley Centre for Global Studies (SVCG). The final champion will have opportunity to connect to an international STEM submit and showcase the project under SJSU. With the partnership and support by SJSU, we encourage to explore join programs and collaboration in the areas of STEM training program, cyber-security and smart city applications.
“We are very exciting to organize this event in Hong Kong by our HKETA Youth team. This STEM competition may have good opportunity for our young students to understand better about our real life by using technology. Students can participate how to create new application or improve real life problem based on their innovative ideas”, said Ms Monica Leung, our HKETA Youth Member, STEM Club Chair and Organizing Committee Chair of this STEM Competition. “Our STEM Club will continue to support STEM activity to local schools in Hong Kong and foster STEM technology in the local community.”
